        How this works

        Where the data comes from

        • USGS stream gauges in Harris County: water level, read about every 15 minutes and sent about every hour, so readings can lag.
        • National Weather Service active alerts, such as flood watches and warnings.
        • US Census address lookup. ZIP codes and place names may use Zippopotam.us or OpenStreetMap Nominatim.
        • Open-Meteo rain estimates from a weather model, not a rain gauge.
        • OpenStreetMap map images, loaded through our server.
        • FEMA shelters reported open through FEMA's National Shelter System.
        • ElevenLabs the voice assistant, which uses the same live data.

        What it can't do

        • This is a prototype built for a hackathon. It is not an official warning service.
        • Risk comes from official alerts and how fast gauges are rising. We don't have official flood levels for each gauge.
        • A gauge measures water at the gauge, not on your street. A spot more than 10 miles from a gauge shows as unknown.
        • It never tells you a place is safe. Never drive through water: turn around, don't drown.

        Privacy

        • Voice calls are processed by ElevenLabs. Your conversation may be recorded and stored by ElevenLabs.
        • Don't share personal information (like your full home address or phone number) unless you need to.
        • Our own server does not store call audio or full transcripts. If you say yes when the assistant asks, it saves a few household details (like your first name, language and needs) to help next time. Ask it to forget you at any time. We may keep a short summary of what a call was about.
        • Map points you check are rounded to about 1 km before they reach our server. Our server keeps short technical logs (such as IP address and time) that are deleted automatically.
        • This website sets no cookies and has no ads, analytics or tracking. The voice assistant may save small settings in your browser, such as your language.
